Weather tracker: Heavy rainfall causes flooding and death in East Africa

May 22, 2024

In recent weeks, Eastern Africa has been grappling with the aftermath of heavy rainfall, leading to devastating floods across Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi. The deluge has claimed at least 90 lives and displaced over 100,000 people in each country, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, damaging farmland, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

The situation in Kenya and Tanzania has been particularly dire, with 32 reported deaths in Kenya and 58 in Tanzania. Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, has been severely affected, experiencing rainfall far above the monthly average for April. The flooding has inundated streets and homes, forcing residents to seek refuge on their rooftops, highlighting the vulnerability of urban areas to extreme weather events.

The increased rainfall in the region has been attributed to the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), a climatic phenomenon characterized by temperature fluctuations in the Indian Ocean. Currently in a positive phase, the IOD has led to warmer waters in the western parts of the ocean, fueling heavy rainfall in Eastern Africa. The situation has been exacerbated by the concurrent occurrence of El Niño, amplifying the impact of the IOD-induced rains.

The repercussions of the flooding extend beyond immediate displacement and destruction, with concerns mounting about the potential for outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the stagnant water. The situation underscores the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness and mitigation measures to safeguard public health and well-being in the face of climate-related disasters.

Meanwhile, in Europe, a contrasting weather pattern has unfolded, with temperatures plummeting well below normal across much of the continent. Severe frosts have gripped parts of France, Germany, and the Netherlands, posing a threat to early-season crops and agricultural livelihoods. The unseasonably cold conditions serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather patterns in a rapidly changing climate.

As communities grapple with the impacts of extreme weather events, the need for concerted action to address climate change and build resilience against its effects has never been more pressing. Green Chronicles remains committed to raising awareness about the intersection of climate change and public health, advocating for sustainable solutions to safeguard our planet and its inhabitants.
