For too long, the climate crisis conversation has focused solely on complex human engineering—carbon capture machines, new energy grids, and high-tech solutions. While those are vital, the most powerful and cost-effective tools for combating climate change are already here, thriving in the natural world: healthy, robust ecosystems.
Nature’s Role in Climate Mitigation
Ecosystems naturally act as the world’s most efficient and safest carbon sinks. Research shows that nature-based solutions could contribute up to 30% of the climate mitigation needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Nature-Based Solutions are actions that protect, sustainably manage, or restore ecosystems to address societal challenges. When nature is healthy, it provides essential benefits:
- Climate Mitigation: Drawing down and storing carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in biomass and soils.
- Climate Adaptation: Protecting communities from the impacts of warming, such as flood risk and heat waves.
